Business Demand
Do you know if there is a market for your home business?
- Is there demand for the product/service?
- How great is the demand?
- How competitive is the area?
- What business models can deliver the product/service?
Researching Demand
An excellent research tool to determine the demand for your product/service, is the free Google Keyword Suggestion tool, at https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.
Start with an intial keyword, such as "home business". Enter your keyword, and maybe one or two variations, into the Google Keyword Tool. Change the United States results to Australian results. Then click "Get keyword ideas". It will then display a list of related keywords, and how many times they were searched for in a month through Google.
This is an excellent way of determining if people are actually looking for your product/service, and how strong the demand is.
The green bar also indicates how much competition there is for the keyword - if it is coloured in all the way, that means there are lots of websites already providing results, and you will have some tough competition getting a good position on the search engines for free.
Another free Google tool is Google Trends, at google.com/trends. You can type in your keyword, and see if the number of searches is increasing or decreasing over time. Eg http://google.com/trends?q=work+from+home. You wouldn't want to build a business around an idea which is fading in demand and popularity.
If you've used these free Google tools, you will now be aware of the extremely large demand for home businesses in Australia. Thousands of people each month search for "home business" through Google in Australia. There is definitely a strong demand in this area.
